Welcome! You’re a Salon Fan Now

Stories are the almost invisible strands that link us to one another and to the accumulated wisdom of the past, and music is the gentle force that amplifies their meaning for each person. The Salon will be a special musical experience and an opportunity for us to connect with story tellers that have made their voices eternal.

Ever since the Fables of Aesop (600s BCE), to the One Thousand and One Nights (900s AD), and Grimm Brothers in modern times, fables have been true to the purpose of creating hope, and helping us to confront the ordeals and disasters of our human existence. They take us to a place where wonders are common and dreams are fulfilled.

In opera, The Magic Flute, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel are folk tales translated into a fantastic form of musical theater. In dance, Sleeping Beauty, The Song of the Nightingale, Cinderella, and the Nutcracker are examples of fairy tales turned into ballet productions. Examples of truly beautiful classical music inspired by fairy tales are Stravinsky’s Firebird, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Nights.

In the modern world of film and theater the list of great musical pieces is not less impressive as the power of storytelling is magnified for the masses in the work of great studios. Let’s remember the impact on our imagination of Pocahontas’ Color of the Wind, Aladdin’s A Whole New World, and Phantom of the Opera’s All I Ask from You.
